Yesterday, I was on a Zoom conference call with 5 other people. The discussion was getting intense and I wanted to add my comments. When there was a pause in the conversation I began talking, but the other people on the call kept talking as if I wasn’t there.

Immediately, I felt shame rise up and then anger. How could they just ignore me? I even raised my hand but they kept talking.

Instead of going down the vortex of feeling unworthy and unseen, I took a deep breath and calmed myself. And that is when I noticed it. My mute button was on!

The host of the call must have muted me and I didn’t realize it. I laughed to myself, unmuted my line and shared my contribution. No one else noticed anything unusual, but it was a sign to me that I still had residual, limiting beliefs from childhood.
